  3. Welcome to the January 1996 edition of the Project Gutenberg CDROM!

  5. This CD-ROM contains the etexts (Electronic Texts) of the Gutenberg
  6. Project for 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and most of 1995.

  8. Most of the texts are provided in both ascii and zip archives.  
  9.  
  10. Here are some important files and directories.

  23. Quick Start Instructions:
  24.  
  25.   Windows 95:
  26.     Insert the cdrom into the cdrom drive.  This will automatically
  27.     start a CDROM browser program called WinView.
  28.  
  29.   Windows 3.1:
  30.     Go to "File" menu under program manager and choose Run.  At the
  31.     Command Line box, type: "D:\setup", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.
  32.     This will install a group folder with icons for this cdrom.
  33.  
  34.     To start the CDROM browser program, double click on the icon called
  35.     WinView, or run the program w16view.exe located at the root directory
  36.     of the CDROM.

  38.  Windows NT:
  39.     Go to "File" menu under program manager and choose Run.  At the
  40.     Command Line box, type: "D:\setup95", assuming 'D' is your cdrom drive.
  41.     This will install a group folder with icons for this cdrom.

  43.     To start the CDROM browser program, double click on the icon called
  44.     WinView, or run the program w32view.exe located at the root directory
  45.     of the CDROM.

  47.  MSDOS Quick Start:
  48.     Change to your CDROM drive and type "view".

  54. documentation on using VIEW.EXE.

  58. Using the 00_INDEX.HTM files
  59.  
  60. We have included 00_index.htm files so the user may use a Web browser
  61. to view our disc.  
  62.  
  63. In order to view this disc using these 00_index.htm files, point your
  64. Web browser to the root level 00_index.htm file.  
  65.  
  66. For example, in Netscape/Mosaic:
  67.  
  68.     1) Choose File/Open File (or File/Open Local File with Mosaic)
  69.     2) Choose your CDROM Drive under "Drives"
  70.     3) Select the 00_index.htm file
  71.     4) Click on OK
  72.  
  73. The 00_index.htm files have been tested under Netscape 1.1 (Windows,
  74. Macintosh, and FreeBSD), Netscape 1.22 (Windows), Netscape 2.0b2,
  75. Mosaic 2.00 (Final Beta), and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  79.                     USING THE DISC -- MACINTOSH

  81. To use the disc using a Macintosh, merely double-click on the file
  82. you wish to view.

  86. This disk conforms to the level 1, ISO-9660 format.  All the
  87. filenames are limited to eight single-case characters, with an
  88. extension of up to three characters.  Most directories have an index
  89. file named 00_index.txt that contains a description of each file in
  90. the directory.
